Expectations were high that the curtain-raising hoopla in Nooo Yawk would be deeply cringe to UK viewers, and boy did it deliver on that front. But nothing could possibly have prepared us for these deeply weird proceedings: a tiny crowd in a field dutifully clapping never-ending, well-meaning but terribly boring speeches on an occasion stuffed with bombast, spiteful jingoism and nationalist posturing, like a village school prize-giving shot by Leni Riefenstahl.
