HBCU
HBCU is an acronym that stands for Historically Black Colleges and Universities. HBCUs were founded in the late 1800's to address the educational needs of Freed Slaves and Native Americans. Today HBCUs are the top producers of professional African American talent and remain extremely important to the needs of the black community.

The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) is an athletic conference consisting of ten historically African-American institutions of higher education: Bowie State University, Elizabeth City State University, Fayetteville State University, Johnson C. Smith University, Livingstone College, St. Augustine's College, St. Paul's College, Shaw University, Virginia State University and Virginia Union University, all working together to set an overall standard of excellence.

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), a NCAA Division I Conference, is in its 38th year of operation heading into the 2008-2009 academic school year. Housed in the Armada Hoffler Tower at Town Center of Virginia Beach, Virginia, the MEAC is made up of 12 outstanding, historically black institutions across the Atlantic coastline: Bethune-Cookman University, Coppin State University, Delaware State University, Florida A&M University, Hampton University, Howard University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Morgan State University, Norfolk State University, North Carolina A&T State University, South Carolina State University and Winston-Salem State University.

Entering its 61st year, the Ohio Valley Conference continues to build on the success that has made it the nation's eighth-oldest NCAA Division I conference. In 2008, for only the second time in the past decade, the Conference expanded by adding Southern Illinois University Edwardsville as the league’s 11th member. The move expanded the OVC’s geographical footprint to the St. Louis market and marked the first change in membership since expanding to the state of Alabama (Jacksonville State, Samford) in 2003.

The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) was founded in 1913 and today, 95 years later, the conference still flies high as one of the nation’s most viable forces in intercollegiate athletics. The present membership is composed of thirteen different institutions in five states (Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina and Tennessee): Albany State University, Benedict College, Claflin University, Clark Atlanta University, Fort Valley State University, Kentucky State University, Lane College, LeMoyne-Owen College, Miles College, Morehouse College, Paine College, Stillman College and Tuskegee University. The SIAC also has a provisional member, Claflin University.

Founded in 1920, the Southwestern Athletic Conference now has 10 member schools, including Alabama A&M University, Alabama State University, Alcorn State , Univ. of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, Grambling State University, Jackson State University, Mississippi Valley State University, A&M University, Southern University & A&M College, and Texas Southern University.
